School of Sport, Exercise and Health SciencesFull-time; Fixed-term to 31st May 2025 (London-based)
The Home Heat Health project aims to establish a UK night-time overheating criterion in London flats and small dwellings, and investigate behavioural changes which can improve summertime thermal comfort, and reduce energy demand. A Research Associate is sought to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team of sleep scientists, engineers and experts in user-centred design and health, alongside other Research Associates, Doctoral Research students and senior academic staff.
The main aims of the job include: supporting the team in conducting a series of studies exploring the impact of overheated bedrooms on sleep quality during heatwaves, and identifying behavioural changes and refurbishment measures that mitigate sleep disturbances during heatwaves. Duties will include: developing, organising and conducting London-based studies to quantify temperatures and other factors that cause sleep disturbances in bedrooms; experimentally trialing co-created socio-technical adaptations to hot weather events, assessing their practicality, adoptability and influence on the indoor environment, sleep quality, and health and well-being for people of different ages; and contributing to the development of strategies for city-located apartment blocks to reduce energy demand and improve the environment in bedrooms.
Candidates should possess a PhD in Psychology (or a related field) or be near completion, have specialist knowledge and understanding of health behaviour from a Psychology (or related) background, have experience in working and collecting data in a health-related, behaviour change and/or lifestyle interventions environment, and experience of collecting, analysing and interpreting quantitative data to a high standard. You should also have excellent communication and project management skills as the job involves extensive data collection and liaison with community participants, and communication with interdisciplinary team members and industry stakeholders involved in the project.
This full-time post is offered on a fixed-term contract to 31st May 2025. The postholder will be based at Loughborough University’s London campus on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, East London.
